Labour Day – A Continuing Struggle

We honour Labour Day, 139 years after the heroic struggle of the workers in Chicago, May 1886. We pay tribute to the courageous battles and sacrifices of working people in our country and across the world. We keep their memory and spirit alive, as their fight remains relevant and continues to inspire today’s movements for social justice, solidarity, and democracy.
Labour Day is a day of strike, solidarity, and resistance against neoliberal policies that serve the profits of the few at the expense of the many. It is a struggle for decent work, fair wages, and the protection of public goods, a strong welfare state, the National Health System (ESY), and public education.
In Greece, this fight takes the form of opposition to government policies that have dismantled labour rights and fostered unchecked employer power. We stand against policies that erode the welfare state, promote the privatisation of essential public goods like water, and leave hundreds of thousands exposed to the predatory actions of financial funds. We oppose the support and subsidising of profiteering in energy and basic necessities, which has led to a dramatic loss in purchasing power and pushed workers and pensioners into despair. We resist the erosion of institutions and the rule of law, especially in the face of the ND government’s cover-up of the Tempi train tragedy.
We fight for the repeal of anti-labour laws, for real wage increases, for Collective Labour Agreements and rights, for dignified pensions, and a robust welfare state.
We take part in local union rallies across the country to mark Labour Day.
