Teleconference on the Surge of Silver-Cheeked Toadfish in the Regional Unit of Kalymnos – Call for Immediate State Intervention
A significant teleconference was held today with the participation of the Minister of Rural Development Mr. Tsiaras, the Deputy Minister Mr. Kellas, ND Members of Parliament for the Dodecanese, Deputy Regional Governor Mr. Filimon Zannetidis, and members of the local ND party organization, focusing on the uncontrolled spread of the silver-cheeked toadfish in the Regional Unit of Kalymnos.
It was emphasized that the issue is not merely an environmental phenomenon but a serious threat to local fisheries and public safety. Incidents of attacks on swimmers have been recorded, while professional fishermen face daily financial losses.
The species:
1. Destroys fishing nets and longlines
2. Damages catches
3. Increases operational costs for vessels
4. Disrupts the marine ecosystem
During the meeting, officials requested the inclusion of the Dodecanese in the pilot program aimed at controlling the species, as well as the development of a comprehensive national management plan.
Local fishermen are not asking for privileges; they are asking for solutions. The South Aegean Region and the Kalymnos District Office stated that they will continue to demand substantial intervention from the State.
