Kalymnos Municipality introduces safety measures – Temporary closure of climbing sectors
The Municipality of Kalymnos has announced a series of immediate measures aimed at enhancing climber safety, as part of a broader maintenance and upgrade program for the island’s climbing routes.
According to the official statement, ensuring the safety and satisfaction of visitors remains a top priority, with Kalymnos continuing to rank among the world’s most reliable and well-organized climbing destinations.
A €700,000 program is already underway, focusing on the recording, inspection, repair, and restoration of climbing routes in line with international standards. The initiative involves specialized professionals and is expected to include cooperation with local stakeholders and the international climbing community.
Until the works are completed, climbers are urged to exercise increased caution, follow official guidelines, and prioritize personal safety above all.
Key measures
Among the measures announced:
- Strong recommendation to avoid opening new climbing routes until further notice, as the island already offers more than 5,000 established routes for all levels.
- Temporary closure of specific climbing sectors, including: Agios Fotis, Monastiri, Austriaki, Sympligades, Spartakos, Jurassic Park, Galatiani, Spilaio, Maieftirio and Ourania.
- Recommendation to avoid non-maintained routes and opt for those equipped with modern safety anchors.
- Advisories for thorough inspection of all anchor points before climbing and immediate reporting of any issues.
Maintenance works are being accelerated, while the Municipality of Kalymnos is expected to issue further updates regarding additional measures for the overall management of climbing activities on the island.
