The Municipal Authority of Kalymnos, acting with a strong sense of responsibility toward the island’s citizens, issues this firm and public response regarding the repetitive and offensive behavior of the Facebook page “Nea Kalymnou”, which appeared on the platform on April 20, 2024, presenting itself as a “News/Media Website” without disclosing any official administrator identity—only an anonymous email address.
Despite its claims of being a legitimate media outlet, the page has functioned as a vehicle for petty political propaganda, driven by well-known figures in the local political scene who refuse to accept the outcome of the last municipal elections. Initially sharing content from local news sources, it has since evolved into a platform for attacks and misinformation, especially through online broadcasts featuring the former Mayor Mr. Diakomichalis and his political allies.
AI-Generated Deepfake Content & Legal Warnings
Recently, the situation has escalated beyond acceptable limits. The “unknown” administrator, with clear political backing, has begun producing digitally manipulated videos using artificial intelligence, falsely mimicking the voices of Mayor Ioannis Mastrokoukos and DEYAK President Michalis Lelekis, using out-of-context fragments from recent interviews.
The Municipality of Kalymnos warns that such actions border on criminal conduct, infringe upon the personal integrity of public officials, distort the truth, and threaten institutional order and political stability on the island.
The Municipality Demands:
- The immediate disclosure of the page administrator’s identity.
- In case of refusal or evasion, the Municipality will proceed without further notice to file an official report to Facebook and refer the case to all competent judicial and administrative authorities.
- The Municipality reserves all legal rights to defend the honor, reputation, and credibility of the Municipality and its officials.
The Municipal Authority will not tolerate any further systematic distortion of reality nor the weaponization of technology to manufacture false narratives.
We call on the local community to reject these anonymous and deceitful tactics, which undermine democracy and insult the intelligence of our citizens.
