Dodecanese MP and Chairman of the Parliamentary Committee on Regions, Manos Konsolas, called on Turkey to clarify whether it belongs to the Western security system, responding to Ankara’s reaction to the deployment of Patriot air defense missiles on the island of Karpathos.
“The deployment of Patriot air defense missiles on Karpathos, as well as the presence of Greek and European forces in the maritime and air area of Cyprus, are part of the Western security system. Turkey must decide whether it belongs to this system or not,” Konsolas stated in Parliament.
The Dodecanese MP described Turkey’s reactions as “ahistorical and unacceptable” following a statement by the Turkish Foreign Ministry that characterized the transfer of a Patriot missile battery to Karpathos and the deployment of F-16 fighter jets to Lemnos as an “illegal act.”
According to Konsolas, these claims essentially repeat Ankara’s long-standing arguments regarding the Dodecanese and the islands of the northeastern Aegean.
He also noted that, according to reports, Turkey rejects even the presence of European forces tasked with protecting Cyprus.
“This stance shows that Turkey is far removed from the priorities of the Western security system and Europe itself, particularly regarding the management of asymmetric threats,” he added.
