Joint press conference by UIAA delegation and Municipality of Kalymnos on climbing safety and rebolting workshop
A joint press conference was held on Tuesday, May 5, 2026, at the Kalymnos Town Hall by representatives of the International Climbing and Mountaineering Federation (UIAA) and the Municipality of Kalymnos, in the context of the annual meeting of the UIAA Safety Commission (SafeCom) hosted on the island.
During the briefing, key aspects of the commission’s work were presented, highlighting Kalymnos’ importance as a leading international climbing destination, with particular emphasis on route safety.
Special focus was given to the “rebolting” workshop taking place on the island, aimed at maintaining and upgrading existing climbing routes. Lionel Kiener, President of the UIAA Safety Commission (SafeCom), outlined the objectives of the workshop, stressing the importance of replacing outdated bolts and applying modern safety standards.
The Municipality of Kalymnos reaffirmed its commitment to supporting initiatives that enhance safety, improve infrastructure quality, and promote sustainable tourism development.
The presence of the UIAA and the hosting of the Safety Commission’s annual meeting further reinforce Kalymnos’ international standing in the climbing community.
