In an atmosphere of deep sorrow, the Municipal Council of Kalymnos convened Wednesday, March 18, 2026, at 12:00, in an emergency session at the Municipal Hall to decide on the honors and the issuance of a unanimous resolution following the death of the island’s Great Benefactor, Ioannis Halikos.
The session followed the Mayor’s decision (No. 48/5321/05-03-2026) regarding mourning events and honors for the late benefactor.
Presenting the matter, the Mayor highlighted the outstanding personality and contribution of the deceased, describing him as a model citizen. Through his generous donations to the Municipality, his crucial support to the local hospital, and his discreet assistance to numerous residents in need, he left a lasting mark on the island’s social and cultural life.
Although he achieved great success abroad, Ioannis Halikos remained deeply connected to Kalymnos, embodying the true spirit of modern benefaction. In recognition of his contribution, he had been officially declared a “Great Benefactor” and awarded the city’s Gold Medal.
The Municipal Council, deeply saddened, unanimously decided:
- To express sincere condolences to the family
- To declare three days of municipal mourning (March 26–28, 2026)
- To grant honors equivalent to those of a sitting Mayor, with funeral expenses covered by the Municipality
- To place the body in public viewing
- To close municipal services and schools on the day of the funeral
- To ensure full attendance of the Council and participation of the Municipal Philharmonic
- To initiate the construction of a bust at Kalymnos Hospital
- To examine the establishment of an annual scholarship in his name
The funeral will take place on Thursday, March 26, 2026, and a request will be submitted for the presence of a military honor guard.
