Unorthodox Cutting of Public Road Trees – Under Municipal Protection?
A serious issue has arisen in Kalymnos regarding the cutting of trees located on a public road outside private property in the Flaskas area. According to reports, a private individual – allegedly under the “protection” of the Mayor and the Municipal Technical Service – proceeded to cut down the trees and then enclosed them within his plot.
Following the cutting, the trees were moved inside the fenced property to create the impression that they belonged to him. Subsequently, the individual applied for a cutting permit from the municipal authority, presenting the trees as if they had originally been on his land.
The incident has sparked strong reactions within the local community, raising questions about whether there was a deliberate cover-up and tolerance from municipal officials, at the expense of public space and the natural environment.
