Work on the Traditional Windmills at the Castle of “Chryssocheria” in Full Progress
The restoration work on the three traditional windmills, part of Kalymnos’ cultural heritage, is in full swing and progressing rapidly. The monument is being highlighted and enhanced daily. The first windmill, located on the lower level, is nearly completed. Its fabric sails now rotate smoothly, driving the mechanism that will operate the millstones used for grinding grain. Meanwhile, work continues on the remaining two windmills, focusing on specialized wooden structures for the roofs and the installation of rotating sails.
The project, titled “Stabilization, Restoration, and Functional Upgrade of the Windmills of Chryssocheria in Kalymnos and Landscaping of their Surrounding Area,” with a budget of €1,168,655.40, is being implemented by the Ministry of Culture and Sports – Directorate for the Restoration of Byzantine and Post-Byzantine Monuments.
The Mayor of Kalymnos, Mr. Ioannis Mastrokoukos, wishes to once again express his gratitude to the Minister of Culture, Ms. Lina Mendoni, who from the very beginning contributed decisively and swiftly to advancing this important project that showcases the cultural heritage of Kalymnos. The Mayor also extends his thanks to the Director of the Restoration Directorate, Mr. Themistoklis Vlachoulis, and the Secretary General of the Ministry of Culture, Mr. Georgios Didaskalos, as all have contributed to the project’s current positive progress.
The Mayor, the Municipal Authority, and the entire island community are closely following the development of this significant undertaking with a sense of optimism, as Kalymnos turns a new page and looks confidently to the future.
