In a well-attended and emotionally charged event, the newspaper “Argo of Kalymnos” and the Cultural Association “Proodos” presented the book “Tsamadou 12 – Exarchia, Athens” by Sakellaris N. Trikoilis on Saturday, May 2 at 19:00.
The event took place in a packed hall on the ground floor of the Kalymnos Center of Culture and History, reflecting strong public interest in the story and its social relevance.
Speakers included philologist Angeliki Trikoili, mathematician and former mayor of Kalymnos Giorgos Roussos, and historian Maria Chatzichristodoulou, each offering unique perspectives on the book’s themes. The presentation was moderated by journalist Niki Reisi, while Lefteris Saroukos provided the musical accompaniment.
The book highlights the history of the property at 12 Tsamadou Street in Exarchia, originally donated by Georgios Thoma to support students from Kalymnos studying in Athens. Beyond recounting the past, it brings forward the urgent need to rethink the use of this space today.
During the event, a formal request was addressed to the relevant authorities to rebuild a structure on the Tsamadou plot, owned by the Municipality of Kalymnos, so it can once again serve as student housing. The proposal comes at a critical time, as the housing crisis in Athens continues to affect students, especially those coming from the islands.
“Tsamadou 12” stands not only as a historical account, but as a powerful reminder of social contribution—one that now calls for a renewed purpose.
