Kalymnos at the center of global climbing – Strong international participation in UIAA Safety Commission meetings
Kalymnos, May 2, 2026 — The island of Kalymnos is currently at the forefront of the global climbing community, as it hosts the annual plenary meetings of the UIAA (International Climbing and Mountaineering Federation) Safety Commission, in collaboration with the Municipality of Kalymnos and the Hellenic Mountaineering and Climbing Federation.
The event, taking place from May 1 to May 6, has attracted leading experts, scientists, equipment manufacturers, and accredited testing laboratories from around the world, highlighting the island’s international recognition as a top climbing destination.
At the opening, a meeting was held at the Town Hall under Mayor Giannis Mastrokoukos, with the participation of local officials and the UIAA Safety Commission. Discussions emphasized the municipality’s strategy to develop climbing tourism with a strong focus on quality and safety.
The mayor stressed that the local authority is systematically investing in improving climbing infrastructure, aiming to establish Kalymnos as a model hub for global climbing development.
UIAA experts have already conducted on-site inspections and technical evaluations, with initial findings described as positive, while further recommendations are expected to enhance safety standards and overall quality.
By hosting leading figures of the international climbing community, Kalymnos is reinforcing its position as a global reference point for safety, innovation, and development in climbing.
