Citizens who have not registered with a Personal Doctor by the end of the month will be automatically assigned one by the system, based on an algorithm.
Starting July 1st, and unless changes are made to the Ministry of Health’s plan, automatic registration will be implemented. Unregistered citizens will be matched to available Personal Doctors in their area, without the option to choose.
According to official data from the Ministry of Health:
- 5,140,008 citizens have already registered with a Personal Doctor, representing 58.1% of the population.
- 41.9%, or approximately 3.7 million citizens, remain unregistered.
- There are still 3,104,146 available spots for registration with a Personal Doctor.
Number of Doctors in the System
Since the legislative reform of the Personal Doctor system in November, the number of participating doctors has significantly increased.
Currently, the system includes 5,263 Personal Doctors, of which:
- 3,864 belong to the public Primary Health Care system (PHC).
- 1,399 are private practitioners.
Despite this increase, there are still shortages in some regions, especially in pediatric care, large urban areas, and remote locations.
Statement from the Deputy Minister
Deputy Minister of Health, Irini Agapidaki, clarified:
“We are not going to ‘punish’ citizens for not registering. They will still have the option to change doctors later if they wish. The same rules will apply to those who are automatically assigned.”
Automatic assignments will be based on the address registered with each citizen’s AMKA (Social Security Number). Citizens retain the right to switch to a doctor of their choice (general practitioner or internist), even if they are not part of the system. However, in such cases, they would have to pay privately.
How to Register
Citizens can register with a Personal Doctor through the following methods:
- Online at prosopikos.gov.gr, using Taxisnet credentials and AMKA.
- At a pharmacy, with the assistance of a pharmacist.
- In person, at a local Primary Health Care unit, such as a Health Center or TOMY.
- Directly at a doctor’s office, if availability has been confirmed.
Booking an Appointment
After registration, citizens can book appointments:
- Through the official platform’s appointment section
- By calling the doctor’s office or their assistant directly
- Through five-digit phone services: 14900, 14884, 14784 (charges apply)
Role of the Personal Doctor
The Personal Doctor is the citizen’s primary point of contact with the healthcare system and plays a key role in care coordination. Responsibilities include:
- General health monitoring
- Management of chronic diseases
- Preventive care (vaccinations, screenings)
- Issuing referrals for hospitals, specialists, or diagnostics
- Updating the citizen’s Electronic Health Record (EHR)
Note: Emergency cases requiring hospital care do not need a referral from the Personal Doctor.
