Mitsotakis Announces Planned Ban on Social Media Access for Children Under 15 via TikTok
Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis used TikTok to deliver an unconventional message, announcing the government’s intention to ban social media access for children under the age of 15.
Opening with the phrase “Six-Seven… now that I have your attention,” Mitsotakis addressed young audiences directly, emphasizing that the video was not meant to go viral but to spark a meaningful conversation.
The Prime Minister highlighted growing concerns from parents, who report that their children experience sleep problems, increased anxiety, and excessive screen use. He also noted that many young people themselves feel pressure from constant comparison, comments, and the need to remain continuously active on social platforms.
Citing scientific evidence on the effects of prolonged screen exposure, Mitsotakis announced that the legislation will be introduced in the summer of 2026 and is expected to take effect on January 1, 2027. Greece aims to be among the first countries to implement such a measure, while also pushing for similar policies at the European Union level.
Addressing young viewers, he acknowledged that the proposal may provoke negative reactions, stressing that the role of government is not always to be pleasant but to provide protection. “If something makes us feel more anxious and less good about ourselves, then perhaps it’s worth setting limits,” he said.
He clarified that the initiative is not against technology itself, which he described as a source of knowledge, creativity, and inspiration, but rather targets the “addictive design” of certain applications and business models based on prolonged user attention.
Mitsotakis also emphasized the critical role of parents, stating that “no law can replace parental presence,” with the proposed regulation serving as a supportive tool rather than a substitute.
The announcement is expected to trigger broad public debate on the regulation of minors’ access to social media and the role of governments in safeguarding children in the digital age.
