The European Parliament’s Budget Committee (BUDG) has adopted a draft resolution outlining its priorities for the European Union’s 2026 budget. The key focus areas are defence, research, and boosting competitiveness across the bloc.
In their resolution, Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) stress that the EU must respond robustly to the current global context marked by instability, security threats, rising protectionism, and worsening climate change.
“The Union needs a strong budget that supports its citizens and addresses its core priorities,” MEPs stated, while also reaffirming steadfast support for Ukraine.
They emphasized the need for joint European investments to ensure a unified and decisive response to both traditional and hybrid security threats.
At the same time, the MEPs criticized the Council for proposing a €1.3 billion cut in budget appropriations, calling it inadequate in light of today’s urgent challenges.
The European Parliament is expected to finalize its position on October 22, during its plenary session, with negotiations with the Council set to begin on November 4. The final version of the budget must be agreed upon before the end of the year.
