Strict Ban from May 1
The Fire Service is urging citizens to take note that, according to Fire Regulation No. 9/2024, the period during which burning of vegetation residue is permitted ends on April 30.
With the start of the fire prevention season, from May 1 to October 31, the burning of pruning waste, dry grass, and other plant residues is strictly prohibited without exception, as part of efforts to prevent wildfires.
Authorities strongly recommend avoiding burning practices altogether and instead using alternative methods such as shredding or reusing vegetation for heating purposes.
For those who choose to proceed with burning until the April 30 deadline, strict conditions must be met. These include prior telephone notification of the Kalymnos Volunteer Fire Station, limiting the volume of materials (to less than 10 cubic meters), conducting burning only during morning hours, and ensuring it is fully completed before sunset.
Special attention must be given to weather conditions, as burning is prohibited when there is an increased risk of fire spread. Continuous supervision by a responsible adult is also mandatory.
Additionally, safety distances must be maintained from vegetation, buildings, and infrastructure, while the surrounding area must be cleared of flammable materials. Adequate firefighting equipment must be available on site, and complete extinguishing of the fire is required after the process.
Failure to comply with these regulations will result in administrative fines.
Authorities call on all citizens to act responsibly, stressing that protecting the natural environment, human life, and property is a shared responsibility.
