The land at Giannochorafa belongs to the Poniris family, whose owners oppose the purchase.
Kalymnos Municipal Council has voted by majority to begin compulsory acquisition proceedings for properties at Giannochorafa, with the aim of restoring the municipality’s former uncontrolled waste disposal site.
The discussion centred on ownership of the land, which belongs to the Poniris family rather than the Municipality of Kalymnos. According to information presented during the meeting, the owners do not consent to the purchase.
Councillors were told that municipal ownership of the land is required to proceed with restoration and redevelopment as part of the site’s permanent closure. The municipality’s lawyer was reported as advising that compulsory acquisition proceedings must be initiated.
The proposal secured majority support, setting the acquisition process in motion. The vote authorises the start of proceedings, while resolving land ownership remains a key step towards restoring the site.
