Statement by the former Mayor
Dimitris El. Diakomichalis
Sadly, Giannis Halikos is no longer with us as of yesterday.
This great Kalymnian, who for the past twenty years had been a point of reference for the island, for all of us, and especially for the poor people of Kalymnos, has left this life far too soon.
He left Kalymnos as a poor migrant and went to Darwin, Australia. Yet when he became financially successful, he never forgot his birthplace.
His works on our island, with the HALIKEIO as a landmark of his contribution, his interventions at Panagia tou Choriou, Kalamiotissa, and our Metropolis, his support for schools, his investments in Kalymnos and Pserimos — where many dozens of our fellow islanders found employment — as well as his constant and quiet support for needy families and for the Table of Love of our Metropolis, were all hallmarks of his great love for people, and especially for the Kalymnian.
All these will leave an indelible mark on his passage through this life, as well as the distinct imprint of his great contribution to his little island, as he used to call Kalymnos.
We will miss his simplicity, his genuine smile, and his great goals for the development of the island.
Kalymnos is now poorer and mourns its modern benefactor.
Giannis, Kalymnos will not forget you, and with gratitude it will bow before your memory and all that you did for our homeland.
Farewell, dear friend Giannis.
