An important informational event titled “Our Food at Risk: The Hidden Promotion of GMOs” will be held on Thursday, May 7, 2026, at 17:00, at the Tritsis Hall of the Municipality of Athens, organized by Greenpeace Greece and the SITΩ and Aegilops Networks.
The event comes at a critical time, as Members of the European Parliament are expected to vote on proposed changes to EU legislation concerning genetically modified plants. Organizers express strong concerns over the potential removal of safety and transparency regulations, emphasizing the importance of maintaining product labeling and traceability.
The aim of the event is to inform citizens, scientists, and stakeholders about the possible impacts of new genetic modification techniques on agriculture, public health, and the environment, while fostering public dialogue ahead of key European decisions.
The program begins with registration at 17:00, followed by opening remarks and presentations from leading experts. Speakers include Menelaos Gardikiotis, President of the Geotechnical Chamber of Greece, Panagiotis Kalofonos from the Consumers Workers Union, Professor Michael Antoniou of King’s College London, and bioinformatics professor Kostas Bougioukos.
The presentations will address risks to agriculture and ecosystems, impacts on consumers and the food industry, and developments in new genetic technologies. A Q&A session and open discussion will follow.
The event will be moderated by Vaso Kanellopoulou from the SITΩ Network and is supported by the Deputy Mayor for Civil Society and Entrepreneurship of the Municipality of Athens.
