Institutional Row Erupts in Kalymnos Municipality
A new political dispute has emerged in the Municipality of Kalymnos following a public letter by opposition leader and former mayor Ioannis Galouzis to Mayor Ioannis Mastrokoukos, accusing the municipal administration of tolerating what he describes as an “institutional deviation.”
Galouzis claims that Dimitris Volonakis has been publicly presenting himself in a role that suggests official authority over municipal sports affairs despite holding no elected office or formal executive powers. He also recalls that an earlier attempt to appoint Volonakis as President of the Municipal Sports Committee was annulled by the Decentralized Administration of the Aegean for legal reasons.
According to the former mayor, Volonakis has been acting publicly as “Vice President for Sports,” issuing statements, intervening in administrative matters, and making public accusations that effectively substitute official municipal bodies. Galouzis further alleges that he became the target of personal attacks during a recent public interview and criticizes the municipal leadership for failing to address what he considers repeated institutional overreach.
In closing, Galouzis calls on the mayor to clearly define the authority and responsibilities of individuals appearing to represent the Municipality of Kalymnos, stressing that respect for democratic institutions and proper municipal governance must remain a top priority.
