The Municipality of Kalymnos and the Hellenic Cancer Society, with the support of our local Medical Association, organized a unique initiative for Kalymnos: Free Preventive Mammography Screenings for the women of the island.
From Tuesday, June 17 to Friday, June 20, 2025, the Mobile Mammography Unit operated at the KAPI center. Women aged 18 to 80 came by the dozens to be examined by specialized personnel, receiving the message that prevention is one of the greatest gifts a woman can offer herself and her family.
The Municipal Authority, under Mayor Yiannis Mastrokoukos, has invested from the very beginning in welfare, support for people and their needs, and the health of our citizens.
Just a few days ago, the successful three-day Cardiology Event was completed in collaboration with the Cardiology Department of “Hippocratio” General Hospital of Athens and our fellow islander, Dr. Skevos Sideris, the head of the department. Hundreds of fellow citizens were informed and underwent specialized examinations without needing to travel to Athens.
As part of the Municipality’s social policy, there was also a prior initiative with the volunteers of all specialties from the “Symplefsis” Group on our island of Pserimos, where medical examinations were carried out and educational activities were held for the children of the remote island. The Mayor and the Municipal Authority were present and contributed to the successful completion of the event.
The Mammography Screenings, which lasted four days—whereas the Mobile Unit usually remains in one place for just 24 hours—reflect the ongoing commitment of the Municipality to its residents, especially to the women of the island, who have always played a vital role in the structure of local society.
Mayor Yiannis Mastrokoukos was present, together with Deputy Mayor for Health and Welfare Giorgos Choulis, and provided every possible assistance so that as many women as possible could benefit from this important examination.
The Municipality’s future plans in the fields of health and welfare services include further such actions, to ensure that our fellow citizens continue to feel as safe as possible on our blessed island.
The Mayor would like to thank the Hellenic Cancer Society, and especially Ms. Irini Deligianni, who was responsible for conducting the examinations, for this immense contribution to breast cancer prevention for the women of Kalymnos.
