Positive Decision for Free Transportation of Athletes on Ferry Routes – Pivotal Role of the South Aegean Region
A particularly important decision for island Greece was made during yesterday’s session of the Coastal Shipping Council (S.A.S.) of the Ministry of Shipping & Island Policy. Specifically, the Council recommended to the Minister of Shipping, Mr. Vasilis Kikilias, the provision of free transportation for all athletes belonging to amateur sports clubs on subsidized ferry routes.
This decision fulfills a long-standing request of island communities and affects more than 35,000 athletes from over 650 amateur sports clubs, according to data presented by the Deputy Minister of Sports, Mr. Giannis Vroutsis.
The South Aegean Region played a decisive role in this positive development. The Regional Council unanimously authorized the Deputy Regional Governor of the Cyclades, Mr. Giorgos Leontaritis, to represent this request at the S.A.S. With his well-documented presentation, Mr. Leontaritis highlighted the importance of free transportation for sports and youth in the islands, contributing decisively to the final recommendation.
The Regional Unit of Kalymnos welcomes the positive stance of the Minister of Shipping, Mr. Vasilis Kikilias, who from the very beginning understood the value of this request for islanders and actively supported its implementation.
This development marks yet another step toward equal participation of islanders in sports, proving that with cooperation and persistence, the needs of the islands can be addressed.
