Kassos Honors Its Fallen Heroes
KASSOS – Greek MP for the Dodecanese, Giannis Pappas, attended the commemorative events marking the Holocaust of the Heroic Island of Kassos, paying tribute to those who sacrificed their lives in the struggle for Greece’s freedom.
The memorial ceremonies took place at Agia Marina, in the Laga area, where a remembrance service and wreath-laying ceremony were held in honor of the Kassian heroes whose bravery became one of the most celebrated chapters of the Greek War of Independence.
Pappas also participated in an event organized by the Arvanitochori Cultural Association, dedicated to the Holocaust of Kassos and local hero Theodoros Kantartzis. During the event, he stressed the importance of preserving historical memory and honoring those who contributed selflessly to the nation’s struggles.
During his stay on the island, the Dodecanese MP visited the Kassos Territorial Defense Unit, where he met with the commander, officers and soldiers, thanking them for their service and commitment to safeguarding Greece’s remote island communities.
In his statement, Pappas described Kassos as a timeless symbol of freedom, national dignity and resistance, emphasizing that the sacrifice of its heroes remains a lasting legacy for future generations.
“The memory of Kassos’ heroes serves as a beacon of national consciousness and responsibility. We honor those who fought for our country’s freedom and continue to actively support our border islands, which are an inseparable part of Greece’s history, identity and future,” he stated.
