“The evolution of the state comes through policies that are implemented and deliver results”
Dodecanese MP of New Democracy, Yiannis Pappas, stressed the need for the Greek executive state to move into a new phase of modern and effective reforms during his speech at today’s parliamentary group meeting of New Democracy.
Mr. Pappas stated that political criticism should serve as a tool for improvement, aiming for a state that is more flexible, more efficient, and closer to citizens’ needs. He emphasized that policies should not only be theoretically correct, but must also be effectively implemented and capable of meeting modern social demands.
Particular emphasis was placed on the challenges faced by island regions and especially the Dodecanese, with the MP noting that Greek islands cannot be approached through Athens-centered policies, but instead require targeted measures tailored to the actual needs of local communities.
Mr. Pappas referred to delays in beach lease procedures managed by ETAD during the tourism season, issues concerning the Transport Equivalent program and subsidized ferry routes, as well as difficulties in spatial and tourism planning. He also highlighted the need to accelerate major infrastructure projects such as the new hospital on the island of Kos.
The Dodecanese MP underlined that insularity should not remain merely a constitutional reference or a theoretical declaration, but must translate into concrete policies that strengthen development, social cohesion, and Greece’s national presence on its islands.
Among the proposals he presented were improving transportation and island connectivity, strengthening healthcare structures, ensuring energy sufficiency, integrating new technologies in education, developing port and airport infrastructure, and promoting the cultural and archaeological heritage of island Greece.
“Our islands are our soul. They are the timeless and eternal Greece,” Yiannis Pappas stated in closing his remarks.
