The Dodecanese MP paid tribute to volunteers from Karpathos and Kasos in an address marking the 85th anniversary of the Dodecanese Volunteer Regiment’s swearing-in.
The importance of preserving historical memory and passing it on to younger generations was highlighted by New Democracy MP for the Dodecanese, Giannis Pappas, in his address for the Pankarpathian commemoration of the 85th anniversary of the Dodecanese Volunteer Regiment’s swearing-in.
Pappas honoured the men from Karpathos and Kasos who, alongside fellow Dodecanesians, chose in 1941 to fight for their homeland’s freedom and the islands’ union with Greece, while the Dodecanese remained under foreign rule.
He described their oath as more than a military act, presenting it as a commitment to freedom. Their contribution, he said, forms an inseparable part of the islands’ historical journey towards liberation and incorporation into Greece.
“The history of our islands was not written solely through diplomatic decisions and political agreements,” Pappas said, emphasising the sacrifices of those who kept Greek identity alive under difficult conditions.
He stressed that preserving this legacy requires more than anniversary ceremonies, calling for knowledge of local history to be shared with younger generations.
Pappas also congratulated the Pankarpathian Association of Rhodes, the South Aegean Region, the Municipality of Rhodes and the associations and organisations working together on the event. He highlighted the contribution of cultural associations to safeguarding historical awareness and strengthening community ties.
Concluding his address, he linked the anniversary’s message to unity and collective effort for the islands’ future: “Honouring the volunteers of 1941 means honouring the very soul of the Dodecanese.”
