Kalliopi Vetta: “Will the unauthorized changes of use at the Epikoureio Cultural Center of Samos, which violate the terms of its EU funding, be investigated?”
At the initiative of MP for Kozani Regional Unit and Tourism Spokesperson Kalliopi Vetta, and co-signed by ten additional MPs of SYRIZA–Progressive Alliance, a parliamentary question and a Request for the Submission of Documents were filed to the Ministers of Interior, National Economy & Finance, Development, and Tourism. The subject is: “When will legality finally be restored regarding the unauthorized changes of use carried out by the North Aegean Region at the Epikoureio Cultural Center of Samos, in violation of the terms of its EU funding?”
This new parliamentary intervention follows an earlier one on the same issue (10.03.2025) and concerns actions by the North Aegean Region, which allegedly refuses to operate the Epikoureio Cultural Center of Samos for the purpose for which it was funded, with the tolerance of the competent authorities.
The building was restored and co-financed by European funds amounting to €3,149,594 to host cultural uses and activities of local cultural associations. This purpose is binding and entails long-term obligations for the State. However, for the past four years, the operating authority is accused of taking arbitrary decisions altering the building’s use, prompting formal complaints by citizens and local bodies. As these allegations remain unchecked, the MPs are asking the responsible ministers to clarify how the case is being handled and to submit all relevant documents to Parliament.
