Fishermen, Legal Experts and Admirals Discuss Maritime Rights and EEZ Issues
Kalymnos became a focal point for discussions on maritime rights, geopolitics, and the future of the Aegean during the presentation of a new book by lawyer and international affairs expert Georgios Noulas, organized by the Municipality of Kalymnos.
The event featured the presentation of Noulas’ book, “The Arbitration of International Court Decisions on the Recognition of Exclusive Economic Zones (EEZ) and Continental Shelves in Island States,” attracting strong public interest and participation.
Discussions focused on issues of critical importance to island Greece, including the Law of the Sea, Exclusive Economic Zones (EEZs), continental shelf rights, and ongoing geopolitical developments in the Eastern Mediterranean. Particular emphasis was placed on the strategic role of Greek islands and border regions in shaping maritime boundaries and safeguarding national interests.
Key speakers included the author, Georgios Noulas, and retired Admiral Ioannis Egkolfopoulos, who analyzed the legal, geopolitical, and strategic implications of international judicial decisions related to maritime claims and sovereign rights.
One of the most notable aspects of the event was the active participation of local fishermen from Kalymnos, who shared firsthand experiences from the Aegean Sea. Their contributions added a practical and human dimension to a discussion often dominated by legal and diplomatic considerations.
Mayor of Kalymnos Giannis Mastrokoukos praised the success of the event, emphasizing the importance of informing citizens and encouraging public dialogue on issues related to island policy, the Aegean, and national interests.
The municipality also highlighted the contribution of Deputy Mayor Kalliopi Koutouzi Vogelzang, who played a key role in organizing and coordinating the event.
