The Municipal Council unanimously honours his decades of service to fishing and local government, with the mayor and all councillors to attend his funeral.
The Kalymnos Municipal Council has unanimously adopted a resolution expressing its deep sorrow over the death of Georgios “Giorgos” Katsotourchis, a former municipal councillor and longtime president of the island’s “Panagia Ypapanti” Coastal Fishing Association.
Resolution 107/2026 was adopted on Tuesday, October 20, 2026, during an urgent meeting conducted by circulation. It recognises his longstanding contribution to the fishing community and public life on Kalymnos.
The accompanying tribute describes Katsotourchis as a prominent figure in both Kalymnian and Greek fishing. The council highlights his determined advocacy for eastern Aegean fishermen and his efforts to draw attention to harassment of Greek fishing vessels and the difficulties faced around Imia.
It also acknowledges his persistent interventions on fuel costs, insufficient state support and the impact of overfishing by large vessels.
His public service extended to local government. He served as a Kalymnos municipal councillor with the political group of former mayor Georgios Roussos and, according to the resolution, also served as a regional councillor.
The council honours his years of selfless service, integrity, modesty and dedication to Kalymnos and its maritime traditions.
Through its unanimous resolution, the council decided:
- To express the mayor’s and councillors’ deep sorrow and extend sincere condolences to his family and loved ones.
- For the mayor and the entire Municipal Council to attend the funeral service.
- For Council President Dimitrios Maragkos to read the resolution during the service.
- To publish the resolution on the municipality’s website and in the local press, and present a copy to his family.
The resolution marks the municipality’s formal farewell to a man whose decades of public activity were closely tied to the concerns, struggles and daily lives of Kalymnos fishermen.
