Four Greek islands are among the top 10 cheapest holiday destinations for Britons this summer, according to data from the UK consumer association “Which?”.
The islands are:
- Kalymnos offers the cheapest holiday packages with an average cost of £847 per person for a week’s stay.
- Thassos follows closely in terms of cost, at £862 per person, as well as Lefkada and Skopelos, with accommodation costs for a week below £1,000.
The cost analysis was conducted on 4,500 holiday packages still available for booking during the first week of August in 70 areas of 15 European countries.
The findings, overall, revealed budget-friendly destinations—a surprise, as noted in the report:
“Traditionally low-cost destinations such as Bulgaria and Turkey were notably absent from the top 10 cheapest holiday packages. Instead, the list includes the Amalfi Coast and lesser-known Greek islands—destinations many would assume to be more expensive.”
This likely relates to the types of accommodation currently available. For instance, the Amalfi Coast offers a wide range of accommodation options for self-catering, bed and breakfast, rather than more expensive full-board packages, resulting in lower prices. Additionally, there are many budget flights to the area. Therefore, holidaymakers should consider the cost of dining out and activities when choosing their next vacation destination.
Other destinations in the top 10 cheapest include:
- Costa Brava ranks fourth with accommodation costs averaging £952 for a week.
- Lido di Jesolo in Italy was the cheapest spot in the country at £965 per person, while the Amalfi Coast was much further back at £977.
- Spain’s Costa de la Luz, Campania in Italy, and Malta complete the top ten, with the latter being the only destination with a cost of £1,000 per person for a week’s stay.
“Which?” analysts also examined the cheapest destinations for an all-inclusive break.
Tenerife had the most competitive prices on average, with an all-inclusive stay costing £1,097 per person for seven nights.
Fuerteventura, another Canary Island, was also among the top five cheapest all-inclusive destinations, with an average price per person of £1,113.
Other options with competitive prices included the Costa Blanca in Spain (£1,103 per person), the Burgas area of Bulgaria (£1,112 per person), and Dalaman, Turkey, at £1,125 per person.
Which? travel editor Rory Boland, addressing British consumers, noted: “Summer holiday travel is generally expensive. Demand is high again this year—but our latest price analysis shows that by being flexible with your destination, you can save hundreds of pounds.”
Many of the locations we found are not necessarily those you would assume to be the cheapest—but from the small, traditional Greek islands to the glamorous Amalfi Coast, there are opportunities to find value this summer.
