Kalymnos Sounds the Alarm Over Demographic Decline – Birth-Death Gap Widens
The Provincial Medical Association of Kalymnos “Skevos Zervos” has officially informed the President of the Hellenic Republic about the growing demographic challenge faced by the border islands of Kalymnos and Leros.
According to official data from the local registry offices, the natural population balance for the period 2010–2024 remains consistently negative:
- Kalymnos has recorded 793 more deaths than births,
- Leros shows a deficit of 558.
These figures were formally presented to the President following a meeting during his visit to Kalymnos on September 11, 2025.
In response to this alarming trend, the Kalymnos Medical Association is co-organizing a conference on October 17, 2025, addressing the implications of low birth rates in Greece. The event will feature contributions from major national and international health and local government organizations, including the Athens Medical Association, the Hellenic Society of Reproductive Medicine, the National Intermunicipal Network of Healthy Cities (WHO), the Hippocratic World Institute of Physicians, the Greek Health Tourism Council (ELITOUR), and the Municipality of Kalymnos.
The Association is calling for urgent government action and additional policy measures to reverse the declining population, emphasizing that the issue threatens the national identity and viability of island communities.
