The Archipelagos Institute of Marine Conservation is implementing a pilot project in Lipsi to plant seagrass meadows of Posidonia oceanica, with the participation of divers and scientists, using innovative and biodegradable techniques. Posidonia, a Mediterranean endemic and one of the oldest living organisms on Earth, is a vital habitat for thousands of species and plays a major role in CO₂ absorption and coastal protection.
However, 34% of its meadows have already been destroyed by human activities, including uncontrolled anchoring, illegal fishing, aquaculture, and coastal construction, while full regeneration can take over 100 years. Archipelagos’ work aims to develop restoration practices that can be applied more broadly across the Mediterranean.
