Meeting of the Greece–Belgium Parliamentary Friendship Group with the Belgian Ambassador to Greece
The President of the Greece–Belgium Parliamentary Friendship Group, Mr. Emmanouil Konsolas, and Vice President Mr. Evangelos Liakos met today at the Hellenic Parliament with the Belgian Ambassador to Greece, Mr. Marc Calcoen.
The meeting focused on cooperation between the two countries and ways to strengthen bilateral relations within the framework of parliamentary diplomacy. Particular emphasis was placed on mutual support for candidacies in international organizations.
Mr. Konsolas noted that convergence of views on issues such as deepening the European project, rational management of migration, and promoting peaceful coexistence in efforts to resolve the Palestinian issue provides a strong foundation for further cooperation. He also highlighted that the already dynamic political and economic ties between the two countries offer significant prospects for growth, stressing the importance of energy cooperation and the exchange of know-how in the primary sector.
Regarding irregular migration, the Greek delegation emphasized that Greece, as a gateway to Europe, continues to safeguard the EU’s external borders with all available means, stressing that an effective response must be unified and binding for all European countries.
Both sides also referred to the significant contribution of the Greek language to Western civilization and noted Belgium’s tangible appreciation of it, as Greek is taught at the Free University of Brussels and Ghent University, where it is a compulsory subject in the Department of Linguistics and Literature.
