Manos Konsolas: “Greeks have heart and soul” – Speech in Kalymnos at the presentation of K. Tassa’s book on the heroic destroyer Adrias
Member of Parliament for the Dodecanese, Mr. Manos Konsolas, attended the presentation of the book by Dr. Konstantinos Tassa titled “The Last Hero of the Destroyer Adrias – Georgios Tassa”, held in Kalymnos.
A particularly moving moment was the awarding of honorary distinctions to the descendants of two Kalymnian sailors who had served aboard the legendary destroyer Adrias.
In his speech, Mr. Konsolas highlighted the historic importance of the event, stating:
“The story of the legendary destroyer Adrias has rightfully earned its place in the pantheon of Hellenism’s historical legacy.
The heroic feat of a handful of men has become immortal in our historical memory.
It is a heroic act that will never fade — the strongest imprint of the Greek soul.”
He praised Dr. Konstantinos Tassa for not only honoring his father through this work, but also paying tribute to all those who participated in this extraordinary naval feat, preserving historical memory, which—as he stressed—is something our era deeply needs.
Speaking about the book, Mr. Konsolas emphasized the importance of sharing this story, especially with younger generations:
“The story of the Adrias is not only a lesson in bravery and life — it is also a window to the future.
It shows us the path of duty, of love for country, for the flag.”
He went on to say:
“The saga of the destroyer Adrias is an integral part of our national identity.
We must preserve it in our memory and let it pass to our hearts — becoming a message of determination for today.
To show anyone who dares threaten our national sovereignty that Greeks do not bow their heads.
Greeks are not afraid of hardship — they are born for it.
Greeks have heart and soul. These are their true weapons when faced with overwhelming adversity.
These are the weapons that make the impossible, possible.”
Referring to the legendary return of the Adrias, he noted:
“The commander and crew of Adrias had heart and soul.
In these very waters, just off Kalymnos, 82 years ago, heart and soul were mobilized to keep the Greek flag standing tall and proud.
The Adrias, though severely damaged by a mine and missing its bow, returned wounded but undefeated to Alexandria — guided only by the unwavering spirit of her heroes.”
Mr. Konsolas expressed heartfelt congratulations to Manolis Mousellis, Deputy Regional Governor of Kalymnos, to Panagiotis Pizania, President of the “Ai Mousai” Reading Society, and to all those who organized the event. He also commended all the speakers for their powerful contributions and moving testimonies.
