Kalymnos Municipal Council Approves Key Projects, Security Measures and Cultural Initiatives
The Kalymnos Municipal Council held an important session on June 9, 2026, adopting a number of decisions concerning infrastructure, public safety, education, culture and municipal operations, while postponing three significant agenda items for future discussion.
Among the most notable decisions were the approval of the third amendment to the Municipal Port Fund budget, the installation of a video surveillance system at the island’s landfill site, the extension of works on school building maintenance, the construction of a bust honoring the late Ioannis Halikos, and the establishment of new municipal choirs.
Key Decisions
- The Council approved the 3rd amendment of the 2026 budget of the Kalymnos Municipal Port Fund, with Councillor Zoidis abstaining.
- Discussion on the 2025 tourism promotion report and the 2026 tourism promotion plan was postponed.
- The proposed amendment to the regulation governing music use in food and beverage establishments was postponed.
- The approval of the Municipal Sports Facilities Operating Regulation was also postponed.
- The Council unanimously approved the installation of a video surveillance system at the Giannochorafa landfill site, aiming to protect public safety, the environment and municipal employees.
- An extension was approved for the project “Repair and Maintenance of School Buildings in Kalymnos.” Councillors Galouzis and Houllis voted against the extension while expressing support for the completion of the project and requesting clarifications from the Technical Services Department.
- The Council unanimously approved the construction of a bust of the late Ioannis Halikos, to be placed outside the “Halikeio” building at Kalymnos Hospital.
- The establishment of a Municipal Mixed Adult Choir and a Children’s and Youth Choir was unanimously approved.
- The lease of the municipal pharmacy premises located in the Town Hall building was extended until December 31, 2026, following changes in the company’s legal structure and name.
- Approval was granted for the lease of a property intended to serve as a temporary storage and management facility for items removed from public spaces.
- The Council unanimously approved the allocation of space in the Municipal Market to a local artisan for the sale of handmade candles.
- Michalis Kampourakis was appointed municipal representative to the Advisory Committees for Hiking and Mountaineering Activities under the Dodecanese Forestry Directorate, with Michalis Plastis serving as alternate representative.
- Two committee reports regarding the destruction of obsolete and valueless municipal items were unanimously approved in accordance with Greek municipal legislation.
The meeting concluded with decisions expected to have a direct impact on public services, safety, culture and local administration, while the postponed issues are expected to return to the Council agenda in the near future.
