In response to a letter from George Mavros
The Municipality of Kalymnos has announced that a special Municipal Council meeting will soon be held to discuss the island’s waste management strategy, responding to a letter submitted by Municipal Councillor Giorgos Mavros.
In an official press release, the Municipal Authority stresses that it is not avoiding public discussion of the issue. On the contrary, it welcomes the debate, emphasizing that the Municipal Council is the island’s primary institutional forum for dialogue, accountability and constructive decision-making.
According to the statement, significant progress has already been made since the current administration took office regarding both the interim and long-term waste management plans, with the protection of public health, the environment and the interests of Kalymnos as its guiding principles.
The special session is expected to take place in the near future. Its exact date will depend on the availability of South Aegean Regional Governor and President of the South Aegean Waste Management Authority (FODSA), Giorgos Hatzimarkos, who is expected to personally brief council members on the latest developments and the overall waste management strategy for the island. Coordination is already underway to finalize the meeting date.
The Municipality believes that the Regional Governor’s participation will provide both councillors and local residents with a comprehensive update on the actions already implemented, the projects currently underway and the remaining steps toward a permanent solution.
The press release concludes by reaffirming the Municipal Authority’s commitment to responsibility, transparency and cooperation, stating that only through institutional dialogue, accountability and consensus can Kalymnos effectively address the major challenges shaping its future.
