Α 44-year-old arrested for homicide
Authorities in Kalymnos are investigating the death of a 47-year-old fisherman whose body was found floating in the sea southwest of the island on Sunday night. The case is being treated as a possible criminal act, as the victim reportedly bore wounds caused by a sharp object.
A 44-year-old Greek national has been arrested in connection with the case. He was identified as the captain of the fishing vessel on which the victim had been traveling. According to reports, the suspect was the person who alerted authorities about a man in the sea, though he allegedly failed to explain the circumstances surrounding the incident.
The Hellenic Coast Guard immediately launched a rescue operation. Patrol officers located the 47-year-old hanging from a life buoy unconscious and transferred him to Kalymnos General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The fishing vessel was taken to the port of Kalymnos, where forensic investigators collected biological evidence and conducted a detailed criminal investigation with the assistance of the local police forensic unit.
The victim’s body is expected to be transferred to Rhodes for an autopsy, as well as toxicological and histological examinations, in order to determine the exact cause of death.
The Kalymnos Port Authority, which is leading the investigation, stated that both the victim and the suspect had previously been known to authorities in connection with other offenses.
