The Naval Battle of Gerontas stands as the largest naval engagement of the Greek Revolution of 1821 and one of the most decisive for the struggle of the Greek people. On August 29, 1824, in the bay of Gerontas, one of the brightest chapters of the Revolution was written.
The Greek fleet, consisting of approximately 75 armed merchant vessels, under the command of Andreas Miaoulis, Georgios Sachtouris, Georgios Androutsos, and Apostolis Nikolis, succeeded in confronting and defeating the vastly larger and qualitatively superior Turko-Egyptian armada of about 250 ships.
This victory granted the Greeks the vital time and opportunity they needed to ultimately secure their liberation from Ottoman rule.
On Sunday, August 17, 2025, at 20:00, the Ceremony of reenactment took place in front of the Regional Hall, commemorating the fire-ship attack against the Ottoman fleet that occurred during the Naval Battle of Gerontas. The event was celebrated on an earlier date to accommodate our visitors.
The event was accompanied by the Military Music Band of the 80th Higher National Guard Battalions Command (80 ΑΔΤΕ) of Kos.
