€587 million for Housing Projects Supporting Public Sector Workers and Persons with Disabilities – Rent Subsidy in High-Cost Island Areas
A major development comes from MP Manos Konsolas’ parliamentary initiative addressing the housing challenges faced by public employees in tourist destinations and island regions.
The Ministry of Social Cohesion and Family, with funding from the Social and Climate Fund, is preparing five housing-related projects totaling €587 million aimed at:
- supporting the housing needs of public servants (teachers, healthcare workers, military and firefighters),
- assisting Persons with Disabilities (PWDs),
- and offering universal rent subsidies in areas with high housing costs.
In an official response to Mr. Konsolas, Minister Domna Michailidou confirmed that a dedicated study is already underway to map out specific needs per island. Mr. Konsolas had highlighted that the rise of short-term rentals, expanding tourism, and lack of available housing have severely impacted public sector housing availability in the islands.
