An intense discussion took place during the Municipal Council meeting of February 17, 2026, concerning the issue of the port’s bathymetric survey and the procedures related to the removal of shipwrecks.
Opposition municipal councilor G. Mavros raised questions regarding the progress of depth measurements within the port area, arguing that the Municipal Authority could have made use of a local company and professional divers from the island. He maintained that the use of sonar alone is not sufficient and pointed out discrepancies in the figures between the technical program of the Port Fund approved by its competent Board of Directors and the technical program on the same matter that was later brought before the Municipal Council.
Responding to the concerns, the Municipal Authority — through interventions by the President of the Municipal Port Fund, Michalis Platsis, and former Port Fund President Anastasios Trikoilis — stated that the process is underway and that the necessary actions have already been taken in cooperation with the relevant authorities. Representatives of the majority emphasized that bathymetry is a technical procedure requiring specific approvals and coordination with port and state authorities.
At the same time, they noted that the removal of shipwrecks is governed by a specific legal framework and that all actions are proceeding in accordance with established procedures, assuring that the primary objective is to fully safeguard navigation safety and ensure the smooth operation of the port.
