Mayor of Kalymnos Giannis Mastrokoukos expressed annoyance and sadness while speaking on Real Voice radio with Rena Pavlaki, regarding a proposal he received from the Turkish coast to transfer the area’s waste to their facilities.
As a Greek and a patriot, Mr. Mastrokoukos initially mentioned that he feels bad “when people from the opposite coast come and hear about what is happening on our islands. From Turgutreis, they said, ‘Since you cannot sort it out among yourselves, we are happy to help you.’ It deeply saddens me when the neighbors to the east suggest accepting our garbage. We are part of the Greek territory and we must solve our issues quietly without allowing interference from Turkey.”
The mayor of Kalymnos then emphasized that “we are not isolated or marginal,” highlighting that since everyone is on the front line, “we must resolve our issues without creating comments or giving rights to others. Just hearing that we cannot solve our problems amongst ourselves as patriots, and others offering to help, infuriates me.”
Additionally, Mr. Mastrokoukos was asked about rumors of nighttime waste transfers from the island of Kos to the landfill site in Kalymnos. He responded: “We are keeping a low profile, but it is true. In the morning, one can see an incredible number of mattresses at the landfill, more than Kalymnos has. It is a fact and a common secret. But what can one do? Start a conflict that makes no sense? I think these are matters that we should resolve amongst ourselves.”
