The Primary Sector Directorates of the Dodecanese and Cyclades have issued a warning following the reemergence of Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) in Turkey (notably in Izmir and Fethiye) and in the occupied areas of Cyprus near Famagusta. While FMD does not infect humans, the virus can be carried by humans, making biosecurity crucial.
Livestock farmers are urged to enforce strict biosecurity measures and avoid animal contact if they have recently traveled to Turkey. Bringing animal feed from Turkey is prohibited.
FMD is a highly contagious viral disease affecting cloven-hoofed animals (cattle, sheep, goats, pigs), with significant economic impact due to trade restrictions, animal deaths, and control costs. No cases have been detected in Greece so far, but veterinary surveillance continues.
More information is available through local veterinary services and the Greek Ministry of Rural Development website.
