On January 17–18, 2026, the island of Symi will host a two-day scientific conference dedicated to the Antikythera Mechanism, Hipparchus of Rhodes, and the heroic Symian divers who helped discover the ancient shipwreck.
The event brings together leading scientists, educators, students, and historians to explore ancient Greek science and honor local maritime heritage. The program features:
- Presentations on the Antikythera Mechanism and its astronomical functions
- Contributions of Hipparchus and Posidonius
- Latest international research findings
- The Mechanism’s use in education and public engagement
Organized under the auspices of the Greek Ministry of Culture and the South Aegean Region, and supported by local authorities and diaspora associations from the U.S. and Greece, the conference includes:
- Lectures, exhibitions, workshops, and theatrical performances
- A virtual tour, hands-on activities, and a statue unveiling honoring diver-captain Dimitrios Kontos
The event will also be streamed online via Zoom and the PAIDEIA platform, offering global access to this celebration of ancient innovation and modern remembrance.
