Rena Dourou, president of the Parliamentary Group of SYRIZA–Progressive Alliance, expressed her deep sorrow over the passing of Margarita Papandreou, paying tribute to one of the most prominent figures of Greece’s women’s movement.
In her condolence message, Dourou highlighted Margarita Papandreou’s pioneering and determined advocacy for women’s rights at a time when even fundamental rights could not be taken for granted.
Her statement reads:
“Margarita Papandreou was a feminist long before the Me Too era. This did not prevent her from being militant, assertive and effective at a time when even women’s most fundamental rights were far from being considered self-evident.
The establishment of the Union of Women of Greece bore her unmistakable mark. It opened new paths and created new prospects. She was always present, guided by integrity and firm convictions.
Today, we bid farewell to one of the most distinctive figures of the women’s movement in our country.”
