Major Health Reform announced by Greece’s Ministry of Health
A sweeping reform of school canteens has been announced by Greece’s Ministry of Health as part of the National Action Plan against Childhood Obesity. The new health regulation replaces the existing 2013 framework and introduces stricter nutritional standards for products sold in schools.
Key measures include a complete ban on processed meats and soft drinks, along with reduced portion sizes for selected food categories. The initiative aims to foster healthy eating habits from an early age and create a school environment that actively supports students’ health and well-being.
Deputy Health Minister Eirini Agapidaki described the regulation as a cornerstone of Greece’s strategy to combat childhood obesity, emphasizing that schools should serve as models of healthy nutrition. Authorities and school operators are expected to fully comply with the new rules before the start of the 2026–2027 academic year.
