Successful Completion of the “From Line to Circle” Zero Waste Educational Actions in Kalymnos
The three-day educational and environmental initiative entitled “From Line to Circle for Zero Waste: Addressing Climate Change” was successfully completed, focusing on reuse, recycling, and composting.
The actions took place from Friday, January 23 to Monday, January 26, 2026, organized by the Environmental Education Association of Kalymnos Island “Hydna,” the Mediterranean Information Office for Environment, Culture and Sustainable Development (MIO-ECSDE), and the Social Cooperative Enterprise “Zeidoros.”
The initiative aimed to connect education with the local community, promoting a Whole-School and Whole-Community Approach to Climate Change Education. The program included teacher training, awareness activities for local stakeholders and citizens, and targeted interventions in classrooms of all levels—from Kindergarten and Primary Schools to Secondary and Special Education Schools.
Two thematic priorities were highlighted:
a) composting biodegradable materials and
b) sorting non-biodegradable waste, with special emphasis on plastics.
A beach clean-up was also conducted, integrated as an educational learning process rather than a standalone environmental action. Collected waste materials were creatively transformed into artistic compositions.
Educational materials based on the MEdIES program were distributed to teachers, students, and volunteers, linking the initiative to the 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
The Board of the “HYDNA” Association expressed sincere thanks to all supporting educational authorities, participating schools, the Municipality of Kalymnians, and the Regional Unit of Kalymnos for their valuable contribution.
