The President of SYRIZA-PS, Sokratis Famellos, accused the Mitsotakis government of creating a “perfect storm” in Greek agriculture, leading to the collapse of the primary sector and despair in rural areas. He highlighted the soaring production costs (electricity, fuel, fertilizers, animal feed), increasing farm debt, lack of farm labour, and delays or gaps in irrigation, land improvement and flood protection projects. He also denounced scandals and clientelism in OPEKEPE, referring to “blue locusts” and claiming that EU agricultural funds were diverted for partisan purposes, depriving honest farmers of vital support.
Famellos focused particularly on the sheep- and goat-pox outbreak, calling it a “wound signed by Mitsotakis” and blaming the government for late and insufficient measures, understaffed veterinary services and failure to use available EU tools. He presented SYRIZA-PS’s key proposals: immediate and fair compensation for livestock farmers with a 50% advance, coverage of feed costs, suspension of tax and insurance obligations, strengthening veterinary services with 1,500 new vets, re-establishing a special compensation fund and supporting Greek livestock breeds. He stressed that rural Greece “does not ask for charity, it asks for justice” and argued that a political change is needed, with a progressive government that has a concrete plan for farmers, young people and productive reconstruction.
