Dionysis Kalamatianos on Student Expulsions: “Education is not a commodity, and students are not soulless numbers”
MP for Ilia and SYRIZA-PS Parliamentary Secretary Dionysis Kalamatianos has strongly criticized the government’s decision to expel students who exceed the standard study duration, calling it anti-educational and socially unjust.
He argues the measure ignores the real-life challenges students face—such as financial hardship, health issues, or the need to work—and adds that students beyond the “n+2” timeframe no longer receive state support, so they do not burden the national budget.
Kalamatianos accuses the government of indirectly promoting private colleges and using the policy to shift public attention away from ongoing scandals.
He calls for the withdrawal of the measure, stressing the need for policies that support students to complete their studies.
“Education is not a commodity, and students are not soulless numbers,” he concludes.
