The Installation of the Imposing Statue of Nikolaos Vouvalis by the Municipality — A Token of Gratitude to Kalymnos’ Great Benefactor
The Municipality of Kalymnos has fulfilled a long-standing moral obligation to one of its greatest benefactors, Nikolaos Vouvalis, with the installation of his impressive statue in the courtyard of the former “Vouvaleios” Public Technical School of Kalymnos — now home to the island’s Nautical and Folklore Museum.
The statue, a creation of Kalymnian sculptor Sakellaris Koutouzis, forms an integral part of an artistic composition that includes a fountain and a traditional Kalymnian “achtarmás” (a blend of local sculptural elements). This aesthetic ensemble now adorns the town center, creating a space of distinctive artistic quality that enhances daily life in Pothia, for both residents and visitors.
The statue was installed today by municipal crews, in the presence of Mayor Yiannis Mastrokoukos and the artist Sakellaris Koutouzis, who generously donated his work free of charge. The project was funded by the Municipality of Kalymnos, with additional support from entrepreneur Kostis Pentafragas, whose longstanding contribution to the island is deeply appreciated.
Kalymnos and its Municipality do not forget those who have left a lasting legacy, such as the great benefactor Nikolaos Vouvalis. The official unveiling ceremony of the statue will take place on Sunday, July 20, in a formal and dignified manner befitting the memory of such a figure.
