SYRIZA-Progressive Alliance Calls for Immediate Convening of the Equality Committee
Government Must Be Held Accountable for Backsliding on Gender Equality Policies
SYRIZA–Progressive Alliance MPs Katerina Notopoulou, Elena Akrita, and Popi Tsapanidou, submitted a request within the Special Permanent Committee on Equality, Youth, and Human Rights for its immediate convening, with the aim of presenting and discussing the 2024 Annual Report of the General Secretariat for Equality and Human Rights, focusing on gender equality in Local Government.
The Report highlights that, despite progress in previous years, gender inequalities persist, while the ND government has effectively abandoned policies aimed at promoting equality and supporting local-level equality structures.
SYRIZA-PA emphasizes that gender equality is a pillar of democracy and social justice, and that Local Government can act as a driver of change, provided there is political will and institutional coordination.
The SYRIZA-PA MPs are requesting that all relevant bodies be invited to the Committee meeting — including the General Secretariat for Equality, KEDE, ENPE, the Ombudsman, and EETAA — in order to present the findings and commit to concrete actions that will strengthen local gender equality policies and address discrimination at all levels of governance.
