The latest disruption, delays, and inconvenience for commuters on the Thessaloniki Metro on Tuesday morning confirm the serious operational deficiencies of the main line. The Mitsotakis government’s failure to ensure safe and uninterrupted transportation for citizens is now undeniable. Less than a year after Prime Minister Mitsotakis himself inaugurated the project with great fanfare, the number of malfunctions – stalled trains, traffic issues, and signaling failures – highlights the scale of the problem.
This incident, like those that preceded it, is directly connected to deficiencies both in construction and in the trial runs. Yet it is the people of Thessaloniki who are paying the price for the government’s irresponsibility and short-sighted political tactics.
The Mitsotakis government misled the public. The Thessaloniki Metro was delivered with significant delays and at a high financial cost, due to compensation paid to contractors for the very delays the government itself caused. And despite this delayed launch, the system is now facing serious operational issues for which the government bears full responsibility.
Thessaloniki needs a safe, reliable, and publicly run Metro system. It’s time to put an end to the government’s deception and false promises.
