Targeted Measures to Halt the Exodus from Rural Areas
In a report adopted by the Committee on Regional Development (REGI) on strengthening the EU’s rural regions, it is noted that rural areas are facing significant population decline, amounting to a “rural exodus,” particularly among young people. MEPs argue that investments in transport, digital connectivity, economic activities such as agriculture, and essential public services like healthcare and education can help address current demographic and economic challenges.
The rapporteur Denis Nesci (European Conservatives, Italy) stated:
“One of the main goals of the report is to guarantee young people the right to remain in the places where they were born, by creating the conditions for opportunities, access to services, and clear prospects. At the same time, we must pay attention to climate resilience and work to strengthen the role of women in rural areas.”
The report will be put to a vote in the European Parliament plenary session from 16 to 19 June.
